SAE International, formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a premier US-based organization that offers invaluable services and formulates standards for engineering professionals around the globe.
SAE International, formerly known as the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a US-based organization that provides professional services and creates standards for engineering professionals all over the world. Home to SAE International's global headquarters is Warrendale, Pennsylvania; located 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. To emphasize its focus on global transportation, SAE International widened its scope to span all forms of mobility - from aerospace and automotive to commercial vehicles.
As a result of this shift in perspective, the organization adopted the name 'SAE International' which better reflects their mission. SAE International prides itself on having a massive global community of 138,000 members.
All individual persons qualify for membership rather than companies, and the organization also actively provides support to STEM education projects and programs, professional certifications, as well as collegiate design competitions.
With SAE International, you can access a plethora of resources geared toward achieving success! The label "SAE" is often used in North America to describe tools and hardware that are measured with United States customary units (inches). Although it's imprecise, the term "Imperial" is casually used when referring to inch fractional sizes or Unified Thread Standard screw thread measurements.
This terminology has been around for some time due to its historical roots. SAE's ratings of car horsepower are renowned throughout the United States. From 1971-1972, SAE gross power was used to give imprudently optimistic performance scores. Since then, a more moderate and reliable measure - SAE net power - has been employed which factors in engine accessory loads, emissions control system losses as well as exhaust drag forces but not transmission loss.
Recently, SAE announced the formation of Sustainable Mobility Solutions a working group within SAE tasked with promoting the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions with a greater emphasis on electrification, alternative fuels, and improved vehicle efficiency.
The group will provide resources to companies and individuals within the automotive industry in their efforts to reduce emissions, increase fuel economy and use renewable energy sources. SAE International is an invaluable resource for professionals who want to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to engineering advancements. With its focus on professional development, global support network, and commitment to sustainability, SAE International provides engineers with the tools they need to excel!
