Dr. Avinash Balachandran is the senior director of the Human Interactive Driving (HID) division at Toyota Research Institute (TRI).
The HID division aims to develop AI-driven tools that enhance human-vehicle interactions. By merging expertise in machine learning, human-machine interaction, and robotics, the department pioneers innovative technologies for future intelligent vehicles.
Before joining TRI, Dr. Balachandran played a key role in Uber's self-driving initiative, contributing to the launch of their first autonomous service in Pittsburgh in 2016. He also led engineering teams at EV startup Faraday Future, focusing on autonomous driving development. Passionate about bridging advanced research with practical applications, he is a respected speaker, expert, and consultant in autonomy and human-centered research.
Dr. Balachandran earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering with a minor in computer science from Cornell University. He furthered his studies at Stanford University, obtaining M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering, specializing in autonomous technologies, performance driving, and human interaction.
