About Pete Buttigieg
As Secretary, he has worked to build a world-leading transportation system, with a focus on safety, jobs, equity, climate, innovation, and organizational excellence. He supported the development, passage, and now delivery, of President Biden’s signature Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. He has also focused on interventions to support American supply chains, launched a comprehensive national roadway safety strategy, and awarded billions of dollars in discretionary funding to enhance transportation through hundreds of projects across America.
The first openly gay person confirmed to serve in a president’s Cabinet, Secretary Buttigieg previously served two terms as mayor of his hometown, South Bend, Indiana, where he worked across the aisle to transform the city’s future. He also served for seven years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, taking a leave of absence from the mayor’s office for a deployment to Afghanistan in 2014.
Secretary Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard University and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He lives with his husband Chasten, their two children, Gus and Penelope, and their two dogs.
